HE.Mbabazi versus Besigye in Opposition coalition
Founding FDC president Kizza Besigye (L) former premier Amama Mbabazi. TDA is supposed to select a joint presidential candidate by consensus, but the battle for the flag will likely come down to a choice between Mr Mbabazi and Dr Besigye
Who between Dr Kizza Besigye and Mr Amama Mbabazi will be the joint Opposition candidate against President Museveni next year? Will the one who doesn’t scoop the joint ticket support the other or run on his own?
The first question, for Mr Wafula Oguttu, the spokesperson of the nascent Opposition coalition, The Democratic Alliance (TDA), who announced on Thursday that the process of selecting joint candidates had kicked off, is premature.
TDA is supposed to select a joint presidential candidate by consensus. Although there are other possible candidates, including the Forum for Democratic Change president, Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, and former vice president Gilbert Bukenya, the battle for the flag will likely come down to a choice between Mr Mbabazi and Dr Besigye.
Dr Besigye has been non-committal so far on whether he will challenge Mr Museveni for a fourth time, especially citing the need for electoral reforms before elections can be free and fair.

But his supporters within the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have in recent weeks intensified with calls for him to stand again. Within FDC, party president Mugisha Muntu has already declared that he will run to be the party’s presidential flag bearer.
Whoever FDC chooses will then come up against the flag bearers of the other parties in the selection of the joint candidate.
